Apocalypto
This bike was the result of an extremely specific set of desires and requirements. There were many unique parts that needed fabricating, and there are tonnes of details throughout that make this bike truly one of a kind.
Jeremy was really inspired by the old parachutist bikes and by Rivendell’s longer chainstays. He wanted a Pinion gearbox as a modern expression of old three speed Sturmey Archer gear hubs and through axles for positive wheel location. He wanted the classic repairability of chains, rim brakes and the adjustability of a quill stem. So we ended up with geometry that is long and relaxed, giving the bike a really stable and smooth ride.
I made brake straddle cable hangers front and rear, and a stubby high quill stem. The adjustable Pinion mount has a stainless thumb dial adjuster to tension the chain, so that the relationship between the wheel and the mudguards stays the same, allowing perfect fitment for the massive Simworks guards over the 650b x 2.5″ tyres. I made brass mounts to hold the basket in place on the front rack, and the rear rack has seperate pannier mount rails to keep them low and stable, and allow more gear to be strapped to the top platform. There’s a spring loaded steering lock to help load the basket when the bike is up on it’s kickstand.
Jeremy is currently refurbishing an old sailing boat to live on and this bike will be rolling up and down the gangway somewhere in Western Australia.
