Crazy Colour Companion

I’ve been calling the tandems I make “Companions” for a while now. There is something magical about a tandem. They are so socialable, so inherently playful (a bicycle made for two!) and so practical for a pair of humans to combine their strength. And with this colour scheme, this tandem team have really leaned into that fundamental joy.

This Companion has S&S couplers all over so that it breaks down into a front triangle, a rear triangle, and a bundle of tubes. The tubes are all labelled with little copper details so that it’s simple to rebuild. There’s a full suite of custom racks of course, with dynamo light fittings. The curved stoker stem was particularly fun to make to make sure the stoker was comfortable.

I turned my own top eyes to keep that classic seat stay cluster that I love, while ensuring a really strong joint, and the chain tension is dealt with by using eccentric bottom brackets in combination with the Rohloff rear hub. Making a tandem is a tonne of work, but I feel they are a fantastic bike to have custom made for you. I hope this tandem sees many thousands of kilometres of joy.
